Wed, 23 Feb 2011 19:43:51 -0800 Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road? http://rylanhamilton.com/why-did-the-chicken-cross-the-road http://rylanhamilton.com/why-did-the-chicken-cross-the-road
SARAH PALIN: The chicken crossed the road because, gosh-darn it, she's a maverick!

BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for change! The chicken wanted change!

JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because she recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see
the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken.

AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I
am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won't
realize that she must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help her realize how stupid she's acting by not taking on her current problems before adding new problems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why she wants to cross this road so badly. So instead of having the chicken learn from her mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a NEW CAR so that she can just drive across the road and not live her life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because she's guilty! You can see it in her eyes and the way she walks.

PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did she cross it with a
toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed, I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.

JERRY FALWELL: Because the chicken was gay! Can't you people see the plain truth? That's why they call it the 'other side.' Yes, my friends, That chicken is gay. And if you eat that chicken, you will become gay too. I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the Liberal media whitewashes with seemingly harmless phrases like 'the other side.' That chicken should not be crossing the road. It's as plain and as simple as that.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heartwarming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its lifelong dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2010, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken2010. This new platform is much more stable and will never reboot.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the
road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

Ahhh.

The joys of renting in a multi-family house in Cambridge.  Below is an amusing exchange between Angela ( and Matt regarding rats. Angela is complaining about potential rat problems, and Matt, the guy who lives above us and watches over the property, is trying to nicely explain that it is not a big deal...The opening line about leaping rats sets the tone nicely. My next favorite line is "Please relax and enjoy your life!" Names changed to protect identities....

You might want to start from the bottom and read up.

Enjoy!

Dear Angela,

The image of rats leaping up at us is alarming. However, we don't have the unsanitary conditions necessary for this to happen.

I'm very confident that the safeguards we've put in place have been effective and continue to work.

There may be more information on this in the future.
Our neighborhood is too upscale for inner city slum-like conditions to exist.

Dear Matt,

So do you think that the holes by the front door are not rat holes? Steve and Ed thought they were rat holes last spring, and after I treated the holes, there was no more activity, until these last days when something reactivated one of the holes. Maybe you're right and they are squirrels. I have a horror of seeing rats leap out at me. They are much more bold than squirrels. Also, if Susan is right, there is a lot of ground cover nearby--Susan, Steve, and Larry, but not me. The dumpster is a brilliant idea. I think we just have to get used to the idea that there are rats on the property, do what we can, and hope they will move to locations where there is more trash.

The salt marsh hay is great stuff and it has allowed me to grow in some areas where I could never grow before, and is helping the pumpkins--looks like it will be quite a harvest!

Thanks for your help,
Angela

Reply to all,

Susan and I went out this morning to inspect the rat holes Angela claims she found. These holes did not look like typical burrows, however, Angela's immediate rat abatement methods made it difficult to determine what is really there. John was on hand to lend some observations, he did not sound convinced that there was rodent activity there. We have a squirrel population that is prone to creating small holes all over the place. I once pointed this out to Angela. The straw mulch used around her landscaping looks as if things are burrowing but, it's only the squirrels looking for their caches and perhaps birds using it for ideal nesting material.

We inspected the entire periphery of the property and could find no other signs of fresh burrowing. I don't know why rodents would want to burrow next to Abbey's front door given the fact of all the activity and lack of food source and water there.
There has been no new activity near our trash barrels.

I spoke with the WatchAll service person today. He said there was no new activity around the bait stations that he set down and also didn't notice any new burrows. All of his observations and treatments are recorded in hard copy print and available from Susan.

I called Steve, our neighbor next door, to ask him about any interactions and experiences with rats on his property. So far he has not replied. More from ed to come sometime soon. I have not confirmed the compost heap one way or another there.

I called Casella Waste Disposal Service in Peabody, MA. They have the contract for garbage disposal for 300 Harvard, the large apartment complex on the corner of Harvard & Trowbridge. They confirmed that in their line of business rats can and have invaded the dumpsters. This source is a possible culprit for rodents traversing the property in search of food. If the container is not tightly closed they will go in as a first choice thereby ignoring the bait stations. The same is true for the alleged compost heap of Steve.

Brian from WatchAll says the rodent population in Cambridge has increased recently. The Department of Rodent Control for Cambridge is on the case. Their response is always...."everyone has to deal with rodents in some way."

The sanitation here is very good and many safeguards have been put in place. In my opinion, the problem is most probably from our neighbors and at this point it's not very serious.
I personally have to deal with this condominiums trash disposal on a weekly basis.  We have things under control but, I think a few of us can do a bit better.

Please relax and enjoy your life!

Matt

Subject: Rats

Dear All,

The rat/s is/are back in the rat hole by my front door. This afternoon, I nuked the hole with the special brew of moth flakes, amonia, and Green rat poison which worked very well in the spring. The fake rock is about two feet away so I think it has no more bait or is simply not a deterrent. I don't think there is any reason to pay the rodent company. Steve has rats all over his yard and has been doing his best to kill them.

Just a head's up to be careful with your garbage and watch what you step on.

Sat, 08 May 2010 07:06:00 -0700 FB CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Business Cards Used To Read 'I'm CEO...B**ch!' http://rylanhamilton.com/fb-ceo-mark-zuckerbergs-business-cards-used-t http://rylanhamilton.com/fb-ceo-mark-zuckerbergs-business-cards-used-t

Back in the site's early days, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg "acted like he was captain of a pirate ship," handed out business cards that read, "I'm CEO...B**ch," and rarely got up before noon.

These are just a few of the revelations from David Kirkpatrick's new book on Facebook, The Facebook Effect: the Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World. (Read excerpts here and here.)

The information in Kirkpatrick's book is "solid gold," writes TechCrunch. Indeed, it's clear the author has gotten up close and personal with Facebook insiders, presenting juicy tidbits and strong personalities in his text.

Kirkpatrick details Facebook's early start in a four-bedroom house in Palo Alto.

Zuckerberg slept later than most -- he seldom got to work in the equipment-jammed dining room before afternoon. His typical garb in the office was pajama bottoms and a T-shirt. When the software code-writing got intense, he was a taskmaster. If someone got hungry and wanted to go out for fast food, recalls a frequent visitor, "Mark would, like, pound the table and just say, 'No! We're in lockdown! No one leaves the table until we're done with this thing." Zuckerberg was determined to keep this ship moving forward, and he was more than happy to be the captain.

Not infrequently, he acted like he was captain of a pirate ship. Among the few possessions he had brought to Silicon Valley with him were his fencing paraphernalia, which he left lying in a pile. Often he'd grab his foil and start swinging it through the air. "Okay, we've got to talk about this," he would declare, one hand held behind his back, lunging forward with this foil. Often the sword would get uncomfortably close to people's faces.

Kirkpatrick's intimate look at Zuckerberg, who, as CEO, has emerged as one of the company's most public figures, presents the former Harvard student as irreverent and unconventional.

As the Facebook boys started dealing increasingly with real business professionals, a reputation for rambunctiousness spread throughout the valley. "It's Lord of the Flies over there," one executive told an executive recruiter. Zuckerberg had to be careful which business card he handed out at meetings. He had two sets. One simply identified him as "CEO." The other: "I'm CEO...bitch!"

The Facebook Effect
explains why Facebook wanted to remain independent and how it fended off acquisition offers.

One excerpt details Viacom exec Michael Wolf's attempts to woo Zuckerberg with flights in a company jet.

Later, Wolf visited Zuckerberg's apartment and "popped the same question he'd asked on the plane. "Why don't you just sell to us?" he asked. "You'd be very wealthy.""

Zuckerberg's response: "You just saw my apartment. [...] "I don't really need any money. And anyway, I don't think I'm ever going to have an idea this good again."

Check out the full excerpt here.

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 19:03:17 -0700 From the Trenches: Thoughts on the HBS MBA Oath http://rylanhamilton.com/from-the-trenches-thoughts-on-the-hbs-mba-oat http://rylanhamilton.com/from-the-trenches-thoughts-on-the-hbs-mba-oat I was interviewed for an article in Asset International 5000 about the MBA Oath (started by some fellow HBS classmates), and I ended up saying what's probably on most people's minds:

“I think it’s great the way the oath has started this
conversation,” says Rylan Hamilton, a former Naval
officer and 2009 HBS grad who took the oath, “but,
when you’re in B-school, it’s much easier to talk
about these bigger issues and say, ‘It’s not all about
the bottom line.’ Now that I’m actually responsible
for a bottom line, things are different.”

I give credit to the writer for using my quote to counter-balance some of the optimism from the article.  To clarify and expand.

1) I think the MBA Oath is a great cause and brings up a great conversation

2) I don't think the MBA Oath has teeth yet, and the more I work in corporate America, the less relevance it has in my day to day activities.

I think most people would be interested on my thoughts on point 2.

When I am at work thinking about growing revenues, I don't use the MBA Oath as a checklist for all decisions I make.  Yes, I make every effort to be honest and ethical at work.  In fact, I think the company at which I now work has a great set of guiding principles which asks us to focus on the long term value of our customers.  I also feel completely comfortable in bringing any issue up to my managers, and I have never been in a position where I have had to compromise.

However, as I review the oath, I wonder about a few promises:

I will manage my enterprise with loyalty and care, and will not advance my personal interests at the expense of my enterprise or society.

What does it mean to be at the expense of society?  If I come up with a great offer which entices people to buy goods they don't really need, is that at the expense of society?  At the company I work at, we offer many "free" products because we expect them to buy other products and pay more for upgrades.  People might buy products they don't need, but to me, that is their decision.  I also think our products enable many small businesses to market themselves at great prices and  they probably buy more than they expected because of our low prices.  Is overconsumption bad?  I don't think so, but who is to judge?

I will protect the right of future generations to advance their standard of living and enjoy a healthy planet.

We sell a lot of printed products.  My company has created a lot of efficiency and also introduced recycled paper to reduce its impact on the planet.  However, we do sell a lot of paper.  My goal on a quarterly basis is to offer products at the best price and sell them.  I do see a conflict in my quarterly goals (Bookings in $) and advancing a healthier planet, but I don't think that's how capitalism works.  I can't make decisions for others, and I know that customers want the products we offer at the best price.  Again, I think the top management is engaged with reducing our environmental impact, but my scope of work is all about selling product and acquiring customers.  Being green is not my number 1 objective at work.  I leave that to other departments who have a more control over these issues.

So I don't disagree with the MBA Oath directly, but I do not think it is at cut and dry as when I first signed up.  I do think there are issues with enforcing it and also clarifying ambiguities.  What happened if I worked for Exxon Mobil? How would I advance a healthier planet?  How do you reconcile your promise for a healthier planet?

To conclude, I think discussion is great, but I think execution is difficult.  This quarter, my number one goal is revenue growth.  That's what's on my mind every morning as I drive to work.  I promise to do it in a way that does not compromise my values, but I don't promise to use the oath as a checklist for every decision I make.  That's just my reality.

  THE BRIDGE

Image001

The Bridge

A man on his Harley was
Riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky
Clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, 'because you
Have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one   wish.'

The biker pulled over and said, 'Build a bridge to
Hawaii so I can ride over anytime   I want.'

God replied, 'Your request is materialistic; think of the
Enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required
Reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would
Take!  I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for
Worldly things.  Take a little more time and think of something that
Could possibly help man kind.'

The biker thought about it for a   long time. Finally, he said, 'God, I
Wish that I , and all men,   could understand women;

I want to know how she feels inside,

What   she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment,

Why she cries,

What   she means when she says nothing's wrong,

Why she snaps and complains when
I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy.

God replied: 'You want two lanes or
Four on that bridge?"
